Municipal electric systems across the United States celebrate Public Power Week the first full week of October each year to help their consumer-owners better understand the advantages offered by community-owned electric utilities like Marshall’s and specific programs and activities that benefit them.
This year, the City of Marshall hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Brooks Substation as part of its Public Power Week activities. The 66 MVA, 12,470-volt substation is currently under construction at 11301 17 Mile Road (South Kalamazoo Avenue). It will be interconnected with the ITC Holdings 138,000-volt transmission system, providing a third electric delivery point for the Marshall municipal electric system.
Brooks Substation is designed to increase electric system reliability while providing additional capacity to meet Marshall’s growing electric demand.
“The City of Marshall has experienced significant growth in electric energy use and demand in recent years,” said City Manager Derek Perry. “Brooks Substation provides additional capacity to meet these growing energy needs, creates an additional transmission system interconnection, and allows greater electric distribution system operating options during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.”
Local elected officials, City Department heads, Electric Department staff, Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA) representatives, ITC Holdings, and project engineers GRP Engineering gathered at the substation site on October 3, 2022, for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the addition of this significant new asset to serve the City of Marshall.
The substation is being financed using $6.445Mof Local Development Bonds issued by the City of Marshall Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA).
Substantial completion of the Brooks Substation is expected in February 2023.
