The City of Flint is welcoming athletes visiting from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada to participate in the 64th annual CANUSA Games. The three-day event features a wide variety of different sports and is the last International Junior Olympic competition in North America. This year’s event will officially start with an opening ceremony at Dort Federal Event Center on Friday, August 5 and runs through Sunday, August 6 with a closing ceremony on the parade grounds located behind Flint City Hall.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley offered welcoming remarks to all of the athletes competing, the workers, volunteers and sponsor families. “The fact that CANUSA is the longest running event of its kind in North America is a testament to ours and our sister city’s commitment to fellowship and community engagement,” Mayor Neeley remarked. “Since 1958 kids and adults alike from both Flint and Hamilton have grown up with the games as an institution that promoted cooperation, competition and friendship.”

Alongside from the varieties of sports that visiting student athletes get to compete in, each one is hosted by a local family, giving them the opportunity to experience all the city has to offer and allowing them to immerse in the local culture. This exchange is the backbone of the games’ motto: “Experience the Friendship.”
