City seeks community feedback for new diversity role

City leaders are excited to introduce the community to our finalists for a new city role – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer.

You can hear from, meet, and ask questions of these candidates during a community event:

  • Thursday, Aug. 11, starting at 5:30 p.m
  • Burma Center, 765 Upton Ave., Springfield
  • American Sign Language, Burmese, and Spanish interpretation will be available in person
  • Event will stream live on the city’s YouTube channel – ASL interpretation will be visible
We will ask in-person attendees and online viewers to share feedback about the candidates on a quick form – this will be available during the event, and on the city website afterward. We will ask for all feedback by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15.

The DEI Officer position was a recommendation from our consultant, MGT. They guided us in conducting an Equity Audit of the city organization. This involved evaluation our Human Resources Department, including hiring practices and policies, as well as our Police Department, including community relations. MGT took community feedback, particularly on police issues, and created a report, with recommendations on how to improve our DEI work.

Our new DEI Officer will guide our efforts as a city organization, and champion the importance of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive Battle Creek community.

We hope you will participate in this important conversation.
