Dr. Marcus Zervos, the head of Infectious Disease Research for the Henry Ford Health System, recently talked about the selection of the hospital as a Phase 3 trial site for a potential COVID-19 vaccine with Paul W. Smith on his WJR radio show July 28.

The Henry Ford Health System was the only Michigan hospital system to receive the designation from the National Institutes of Health, according to the Henry Ford Health System website.

“It is good news that we’re going to be starting vaccine trials,” Zervos said on "The Paul W. Smith Show." “This is a very promising vaccine.”

The study is focusing on those who are at higher risk of exposure to the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, such as first responders and health care workers, Zervos told Smith. Those who are pregnant, under 18 or are immunocompromised are not eligible to participate in the study.

Zervos told Smith that volunteers for the trial will receive two doses of either the vaccine or a placebo: one at the start of the trial and one 28 days later. Volunteers will be monitored both for the response from their immune system to the vaccine and for any negative reactions to the vaccine.

“We also measure whether somebody gets an infection or not, and antibodies being produced along the way that would be protective,” Zervos told Smith.

The hope is that the program will be able to enroll the full 30,000 volunteers needed for the study in a short amount of time, Zervos said.

“This is moving very quickly, and we’re hoping to be able to enroll, nationally, the 30,000 subjects... within the next couple of months,” he told Smith.

Those interested in participating in the study can go to the Henry Ford Health System website to apply.
