Enrollment at Athens Area Schools decreased by 1.6% compared to previous school year

There were 503 students enrolled in Athens Area Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 1.6% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 53.3% of them were girls, and 46.7% were boys.

Data also shows that most of the students were white, representing 85.9% of the Athens Area Schools total enrollment.

Athens Area Schools covers two schools within Calhoun County with its main office in East Leroy. Among them, Athens Junior-Senor High School recorded the highest enrollment of 268 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
