Mary Burlingame is a 20-year BCPS school nurse and an invaluable member of our school family. So many of our students find a way daily to make a visit to see “Nurse Mary.” She goes above and beyond her everyday job, taking care of those who are ill, assessing injuries, and contacting the parents of every sick or injured child to let them know that their student may come home with a band-aid or a mark they did not come to school with. This year she even created a “potty training” program to help new Parents. Our parents were ever so grateful for the assistance she was able to provide.
If you were to walk into her office, you would be pleasantly surprised with a cozy seating area and various cots with warm fuzzy blankets for students to settle into if they need to wait for a parent to pick them up or if they need a little time to rest. All this is set with soft music in the background.
Nurse Mary also goes into each classroom conducting several presentations throughout the school year on hygiene and handwashing. During the Winter Season, she gifts our students with gloves and other cute gifts to put smiles on their faces.
The most amazing thing about Nurse Mary is the depth of her heart. She is always willing to step in and assist, no matter the situation. Every month, there are packages that are delivered to the school with items for our students, purchased out of her own funds. If there is a need, she tries to fill it.
Here is a very special quote from Nurse Mary:
“I remember being one of these kids, so now it’s time for me to give back.”
