2022-2024 Battle Creek City Commission officially sworn in

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City Clerk officially swore in the new Battle Creek City Commission during their Dec. 6 organizational meeting.

The City Commission is comprised of five ward commissioners, who are elected to represent geographic wards within the city, and three at-large commissioners, who are elected to represent the city as a whole. Following a passed charter amendment in March 2020, the office of Mayor of the City of Battle Creek is now elected by the voters as a separate position on the City Commission.

This commission will serve two-year terms, from 2022-2024.

Re-elected to serve another two-year term as Mayor of the City of Battle Creek is Mark Behnke. As Mayor, Behnke holds an at-large seat on the nine-person City Commission, presides over all meetings of the City Commission, and serves in various ceremonial roles on behalf of the city.

Joining Mayor Mark Behnke on the 2022-2024 City Commission are:

  • Roger Ballard, representing the city as Ward 1 Commissioner
  • Jenasia Morris, representing the city as Ward 2 Commissioner
  • Patrick O'Donnell, representing the city as Ward 3 Commissioner
  • Christopher Simmons, representing the city as Ward 4 Commissioner
  • Jim Lance, representing the city as Ward 5 Commissioner
  • Carla Reynolds, representing the city as an At-Large Commissioner
  • Jake W. Smith, representing the city as an At-Large Commissioner
  • Sherry Sofia, representing the city as an At-Large Commissioner
The commission voted 5-4 to appoint Commissioner Sherry Sofia to the office of Vice Mayor; this is the process by city charter.

The City Commission also approved their 2022-2023 meeting dates as the first and third Tuesdays of each month, at 7 p.m., in the City Commission Chambers, Room 301, at City Hall, 10 N. Division St., Battle Creek, MI 49014, with the exceptions of April 11 (changed due to spring break) and July 11 (changed due to July 4 holiday). Find the full list of dates on the city’s website.

Neighbors wishing to make official public comment at a City Commission meeting must attend the meeting in person, or email CityClerk@battlecreekmi.gov The Clerk's Office shares these comments with the City Commission, but they are not read aloud at the meetings.
