BC voters will get new ID cards; city seeks election workers

The 2022 election season is in full swing, and the City Clerk’s Office has a start to the information and reminders our voters need to successfully participate this August and November.

First, following the 2020 Census, the state, county, and city have updated information related to legislative district numbers and maps, county commission district, and city precincts and wards. All voters in the City of Battle Creek will receive new voter cards in the mail to reflect these updates.

Within the City of Battle Creek, please note the following:

  • The U.S. Congressional Representative District is now District 4.
  • The Michigan Senate District is now District 18.
  • The Michigan Representative District is now District 44.
  • Boundary lines have changed slightly in each, but the City of Battle Creek remains in the Calhoun County Commission Districts 1, 2, and 3.
Once the state and county completed these changes, the city reviewed our five wards. Our city charter requires us to review the U.S. Census population data and change ward boundaries when that data shows a population imbalance of more than 10 percent.

With the 2020 U.S. Census data, this resulted in rebalancing that affects portions of:

  • Ward 1: Precincts 4 and 10
  • Ward 2: Precinct 18
  • Ward 3: Precinct 1
  • Ward 4: Precincts 2, 8, and 9
  • Ward 5: Precincts 3 and 5
Voters should check their ID cards for their specific information (see attached example).

Second, we are looking for neighbors to participate in the elections as workers, a great way to make a big impact on your community. These are paid positions ($11-13 currently, but subject to change this year), and duties include setting up polling stations, assisting voters at the polls, checking voter registrations, and entering names into poll books. The city has about 39,000 voters.

You are eligible to apply if you are:

  • Age 16-18 and a Michigan resident; or age 18 or older, a U.S. citizen, and a registered Michigan voter
  • Able to attend a training session – set for Tuesday, June 28 at Kellogg Arena
  • Able to work at any polling location
  • Available to work from 6 a.m. on Election Day until the polls close and final balancing is complete (typically a 16-hour day); elections are Aug. 2 and Nov. 8 this year
  • Available for additional balancing at the Calhoun County Board of Canvassers as necessary
  • Not convicted of a felony or election crime
To apply, complete the application at the city’s website, battlecreekmi.gov/elections. Click the Election Inspectors tab and scroll to the application link. Return the application, with a copy of your driver’s license or state ID, and Social Security card, to the Clerk’s Office, 10 N. Division St., Suite 111, Battle Creek, MI 49014.

Find more information on the city’s website, battlecreekmi.gov/elections, or call our City Clerk team at 269-966-3311. Also bookmark the state website Michigan.gov/vote, where you can register to vote, see a sample ballot when it’s ready, get information about your polling place, and see much more election information.
