October Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Hhw2

City of Marshall issued the following announcement on Oct 9.

Calhoun County will be holding a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, October 23, from 9 a.m. till Noon. The event will be held in the parking lot, behind the Toeller Building located at 190 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek. This event accepts residential material only and is open to all Calhoun County residents.

Participants will need to remain in their vehicles. To reduce traffic congestion, please approach the event on Bennett St. heading towards Main St.

The event will accept the following items:

Household hazardous waste – oil-based paint and stain, fuels (please use fuel cans), solvents, acids, bases, pesticides, household cleaners, metallic mercury, medications, sharps, household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, motor oil, antifreeze, propane cylinders, fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, and lamp ballasts. No latex paint will be unloaded.

How can I tell if I have latex or oil-based paint? Latex paint labels will use words such as “latex,” “acrylic latex,” or “cleans up with soap and water.” Read the ingredients list and look for the word “water.” If you have oil-based paint, your label will say “alkyd,” “oil-based,” and “caution: combustible.” The label will mention “mineral spirits,” “soya oil,” “aliphatic hydrocarbons,” or “petroleum distillates.”

Please separate paint from the rest of your items and pack your items carefully, so they do not spill while in transport. We can’t guarantee that your containers will be returned.
