City of Battle Creek issued the following announcement.
The Nov. 3 presidential election is just over two months away, and the Battle Creek City Clerk’s Office is working hard to prepare, seeking enough election workers to cover the polls in person, and working through the absentee ballot process.
Election workers
The City Clerk once again seeks community members to work at the city’s 21 precincts. We seek chairpersons, computer operators, and election inspectors, and you can earn $11-13 per hour.
You will assist voters at the polls, check voter registrations, enter names into poll books, and set up polling stations. The city’s precincts serve about 39,000 voters.
To be eligible, you must:
- Be age 16-18 and a Michigan resident; or be age 18 or older, a U.S. citizen, and a registered Michigan voter
- Attend a training session
- Be able to work at any polling location
- Be able to work from 6 a.m. on Election Day until the polls have closed and final balancing is complete (typically a 16-hour day)
- Be available for additional balancing at the Calhoun County Board of Canvassers as necessary
- Not ever have been convicted of a felony or election crime
Absentee ballots
If you request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 3 presidential election, the Battle Creek City Clerk will mail it near the end of September.
If you still want to apply for an absentee ballot, you can find the application at battlecreekmi.gov/elections. Click the Absentee Ballots tab.
You can also visit that tab to complete the form that will place you on the permanent absentee voter list. Once you are on the list, you will receive a ballot application in the mail before every election. You do not have to commit to absentee voting; even if you apply to vote by mail, you can change your mind and vote in person.
The Secretary of State/Bureau of Elections has begun mailing postcards to voters who have not requested an absentee ballot, informing them of the opportunity to apply. Absentee voting by mail – or by dropping off your application and ballot in the designated drop box outside City Hall – is easy, safe, convenient, and secure, and every voter in Michigan has the right to vote absentee.
Please remember that receiving an absentee ballot application does not guarantee you a ballot – you must complete the application, sign it, and return it to the City Clerk’s Office. You can mail it in the pre-paid postage envelope, drop it into the new drop box, or scan/photograph it and email it to the Clerk’s Office at cityclerk@battlecreekmi.gov. Staff will verify signatures against an applicant’s voter registration before sending a ballot.
If you receive election mail at your address for someone who does not live there, please write “Return to sender – no longer lives at this address” on the envelope and place it back in the mail. This helps local clerks update the address and status of all registered voters.
