U.S. and State of Michigan flags will be flown at half-staff across Battle Creek on Sunday, December 7, in recognition of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This observance marks the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, during which 2,403 Americans lost their lives.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day was established by the United States Congress on August 23, 1994. The day serves to honor and remember those who died as a result of the attack.
Flag protocol for this observance requires that flags be hoisted to the peak briefly before being lowered to half-staff at sunrise. At sunset, the process is reversed before lowering the flag for the day. Flags should return to full staff after sunset on December 7.
