The City of Battle Creek announced on Apr. 23 that two Department of Public Works employees, Melissa Whitcomb and Kennedy Smith, have completed the Michigan Public Service Institute (MPSI) program. The MPSI is a multiyear professional development experience designed for local government employees across Michigan.
According to the city, this training aims to strengthen leadership, management, and collaboration skills among public service workers. These skills are intended to support effective planning, teamwork, and service delivery within local government departments.
Whitcomb and Smith participated in the MPSI program as part of an ongoing effort by Team Battle Creek to invest in its workforce. The city said that developing future leaders from within helps build a knowledgeable staff focused on meeting community needs both now and in the future.
A statement from the city congratulated Whitcomb and Smith for their achievement and thanked them for their commitment to serving Battle Creek residents.
As more municipal employees pursue advanced training opportunities like MPSI, cities such as Battle Creek aim to ensure reliable public services through skilled leadership.
