City's Human Relations Board seeks input related to police issues

The city’s Human Relations Board wants to hear from community members about the idea of forming a Citizens Review Board.

A CRB can have different purposes and goals in a community, relating to neighbors who want to have an impact on their community’s police or public safety department. In some communities, a CRB is formed after a specific case or situation, and the group can recommend sanctions for officer misconduct. A CRB can provide oversight to a police department, and hear complaints that are appealed after a police investigation.

Some groups in Battle Creek have discussed forming such a board for several years. The city’s HRB, which discusses and advises city staff on issues related to human rights, wants to engage the community in this conversation.
