“Art helps us develop empathy and understanding of people whose experience of the world is different from ours,” says Erin Bartels, award-winning local author.
Writing has always been close to Erin. She works professionally as a copywriter and began writing fiction in 2010. Her first novel won a Michigan Notable Book Award in 2020, and her fourth book, “The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water,” was released this January.
Erin writes about a lot of things. Among them, she explores relationships, betrayal, memory, and how we live as people in a broken world. Fundamentally, her stories examine people trying to be better to each other and kinder to themselves. As a Lansing creative, Erin finds excitement and inspiration in the diversity of arts our community offers. As a resident, she looks eagerly toward the future. “I think that’s because there are passionate people living in this town who see potential and are willing to put in the work and investment to make that potential a reality,” she says.
