CITY OF ALBION: Basketball Courts Closed

Closed

City of Albion issued the following announcement.

It has come to our attention there have been 2 basketball tournaments held in Holland Park within the last few weeks.

The latest tournament was held on Sunday, June 28, 2020 and drew well over a hundred spectators and participants from Kalamazoo, Jackson, Battle Creek, Lansing and other areas of the state.  With the recent spikes in COVID-19 cases including spikes in younger populations, we feel it is prudent to make sure these events do not happen in the Albion community at this time, for the safety of our citizens.

As a result we have ordered the basketball rims at all city parks to be removed until such time it is considered safe for groups of people to interact in close proximity in public.  Video from this latest tournament showed hundreds of spectators standing close together all around the court without masks or other personal protection.  The CDC has made it clear that events like this are a leading cause in the spikes of COVID-19.

While we hate to take away recreational activities for our local youth, we feel this action is necessary for the health and wellbeing of the Albion community.
