CITY OF BATTLE CREEK: No injuries in suspicious abandoned factory fire

Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department was dispatched to black smoke coming from a factory on Fonda Ave.  Rescue 3 and Car 3 arrived four minutes later to find flames showing from the roof of an elevator shaft at an abandoned factory.  A defensive fire position was initially established due to the condition of the building.  Car 3 assumed command.  Rescue 3 extended a large diameter hand line to begin extinguishing the fire.  Engine 2 assisted with the fire attack while Rescue 4 utilized a hydrant for water supply.  Truck 6 assisted with forcible entry and roof operations.  Squad 6 was the safety officer.  The fire was extinguished in 40 minutes with no injuries reported. 

The fire is suspicious with no cause determined.  The Battle Creek Police Department is investigating a report that children were seen running from the structure at the time of alarm.  If anyone has information on this fire, please call fire department headquarters at 269-966-3519.
