The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office will have a new leader come April 18.
A special committee named veteran Det. Steve Hinkley to the post in March. Hinkley has been a detective at the Sheriff’s Office for 27 years.
He replaces Sheriff Matt Saxton who will become the Michigan Sheriff’s Association director in April.
Hinkley, according to multiple media reports, was the lone candidate for the unexpired sheriff’s term when the committee appointed him on March 11.
“It was easy in that there was only one applicant and choosing among one applicant is rather easy but, digging into the qualifications, it was not a difficult selection," Probate Judge Michael Jaconette, a selection committee member, said about the appointment, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer,
Jaconette added that “You look at people and do they look at the clock or do they do the work. Steve Hinkley does the work.”
Hinkley intends to seek a full four-year team as county sheriff, the publication reported.
