The Michigan Senate has passed a bill that would impose a fee on tow trucks and wreckers used in certain situations.
Senate Bill 309, which received a 38 to 0 vote on Sept. 4, would impose a $50 annual motor carrier fee on tow trucks and wreckers specifically used in “nonconsensual towing operations,” according to Michigan Vote.
The bill was first introduced by Sen. Dale W. Zorn (R-Ida) on May 9. The Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee reviewed the bill first and sent it to the Senate on June 20 with a recommended substitution and a recommendation for it to pass.
The bill was received in the House on Sept. 4 and was referred to the House Transportation Committee.
According to the Michigan Vote website, nonconsensual towing operations generally refers to the removal of illegally parked cars.
