State Representative Steve Frisbie (R-Battle Creek) has expressed support for the House Energy Committee’s recent approval of his proposed Natural Gas Protection Bill, known as House Bill 4486. The legislation aims to prevent local governments in Michigan from banning or restricting natural gas services and infrastructure.
“Michigan families should not face higher costs or lose access to the energy sources they depend on,” Frisbie said. “House Bill 4486 establishes a clear statewide standard that protects consumers and prevents a patchwork of costly regulations.”
The bill, introduced on May 8, 2025, would stop cities, townships, and counties from enacting bans on natural gas use in both new and existing buildings. It also prohibits restrictions on installing natural gas piping or appliances and blocks building codes that would require all-electric construction where natural gas is available.
Frisbie referenced developments in other states where local bans have led to increased heating costs and affected construction activity. He argued that Michigan should avoid similar outcomes by keeping a consistent statewide policy.
“Local bans create confusion and financial strain at a time when families are already struggling,” Frisbie said. “This legislation keeps energy affordable and ensures that residents have the options they need, especially during Michigan’s coldest months.”
With committee approval secured, House Bill 4486 will now proceed to the full House for further debate. Frisbie and supporters are advocating for swift passage so that residents and businesses can maintain reliable access to natural gas during winter.
