State Representative Steve Frisbie (R-Battle Creek) has called on the federal government to temporarily pause a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) order that would impact Burmese nationals living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Frisbie addressed his concerns in a letter sent this week to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. He highlighted the possible effects of the order on families, workers, and communities in Battle Creek and Springfield, Michigan.
“The individuals affected by this decision are long-standing members of our communities,” said Frisbie. “They work hard, raise their families, and contribute to our local economy. Sending them back to Myanmar could put them in serious danger and tear apart the lives they’ve built here.”
Burmese nationals were granted TPS due to instability and humanitarian issues in Myanmar. According to Frisbie, these conditions remain uncertain.
In his correspondence, Frisbie urged DHS to carefully weigh enforcement priorities against humanitarian concerns before implementing any changes. He noted that rapid action could create uncertainty for families involved.
“These are families who are established members of our community,” said Frisbie. I respectfully ask federal officials to review the available information and consider the real-life circumstances these families face.”
