Battle Creek police said on Apr. 3 that they are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Thursday afternoon on M-37 near Marvin Street.

The incident is significant as it resulted in the death of a local resident and may have been caused by a medical emergency, according to authorities.

Police reported that a 42-year-old man from Bedford Township was driving northbound when witnesses saw him slump toward the passenger side of his vehicle. The car then left the roadway and struck a tree. Investigators noted there were no signs of braking before the collision, leading them to believe that a medical emergency contributed to the crash.

LifeCare Ambulance and the Bedford Fire Department responded quickly and attempted life-saving measures at the scene. Despite their efforts, officials said the driver was pronounced dead at 4:42 p.m. The man’s name has not been released pending notification of his next of kin.

Authorities confirmed that the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
