This week, Representative Steve Frisbie supported the Michigan House’s fiscal year 2026 K-12 budget. The plan aims to prioritize students through increased funding and enhanced local control.
“By raising the per-pupil foundation allowance to $12,000—a $2,392 increase per student—we’re investing directly in our classrooms and cutting out cumbersome grants so districts can address their unique needs,” stated Frisbie.
The budget highlights include an unprecedented boost in the foundation allowance to $12,000 per student. This increase is intended to provide more resources for core instruction and support services. Additionally, categorical programs such as school resource officers, safe transportation, and meal programming are now part of the base allowance. This change is designed to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and allow local leaders greater flexibility in fund allocation.
More than $300 million has been allocated for school counselors, trauma-informed training, and on-campus security. These funds aim to restore previous cuts and ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
The budget will proceed to the Senate for further consideration. Rep. Frisbie encourages parents, educators, and community stakeholders to provide feedback as lawmakers continue refining this significant investment in Michigan’s education system.
