The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will resume work on the Marshall Modernization Project starting the week of March 2, 2026. This year’s construction efforts will concentrate on M-96 (Michigan Avenue) and I-94, including significant upgrades at the I-94 interchange with M-311 (11 Mile Road) and improvements to M-96.
The project represents the second phase of a three-year initiative valued at $335 million. The goal is to rebuild and repave major routes such as I-94, I-69, and M-96 to support development around the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunity and Recreation (MAJOR) Campus.
According to MDOT, “Work on the Marshall Modernization Project starts the week of March 2, with this year’s work focused on M-96 (Michigan Avenue) and I-94.” They added that in 2026, activities will center on upgrading infrastructure near the MAJOR Campus.
Planned work for 2026 includes rebuilding I-94 between F Drive North and Ackerson Drive, reconfiguring the I-94 interchange with M-311, reconstructing the M-96 bridge over I-94, and transforming M-96 into a boulevard from Wheatfield Parkway to M-311.
During construction, two lanes in each direction will remain open on I-94 while one lane will be available in each direction on M-96. There may be occasional full closures; detour information will be provided as those dates approach.
Looking ahead to 2027—the final year—crews plan to build a new M-311 bridge over I-94, finish work at the I-94/M-311 interchange, reconstruct parts of I‑94, M‑311 and Wheatfield Parkway, and complete conversion of M‑96 into a boulevard stretching from M‑311 to Eden Street.
