State Representative Steve Frisbie presented House Bill 4486 to the Michigan House Energy Committee on June 3, 2025. The bill aims to prevent local governments from banning natural gas infrastructure, thereby ensuring continued access to this energy source for homeowners and businesses.
The proposed legislation comes in response to potential ordinances in Ann Arbor that would prohibit natural gas use. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, natural gas is significantly more cost-effective than electricity, with annual energy bills for homes using natural gas being 49% lower than those relying solely on electricity. Furthermore, homes powered by natural gas emit 11% fewer emissions compared to those using a mix of electricity and other sources.
Frisbie emphasized the importance of maintaining access to natural gas: “Natural gas is a critical resource—dependable and affordable,” he stated. He argued that removing such infrastructure could impose additional costs and adversely affect residents across Michigan.
“Who are we to tell a family how they can keep their families warm following an ice storm?” Frisbie questioned. He expressed concern that restrictive measures could leave households without necessary heating during critical times.
While the Energy Committee has heard testimony regarding the bill, no vote was taken on this occasion. A decision on House Bill 4486 is anticipated in the coming weeks.
