Battle Creek residents now have a new option for retiring worn American flags, following the installation of a secure collection box at the Battle Creek Police Department. The project was led by Josie Pawlowicz, a senior at Lakeview High School and the Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center.

The collection box, located in the police department lobby, was unveiled on November 10 during an event attended by Mayor Mark Behnke, Commissioner Chris Simmons of Ward 4, Josie’s parents Melissa and Jerry Pawlowicz, and community partners including leaders from the Cereal City Sunrise Rotary Club. The first flags were contributed by Commissioner Simmons and the city’s Recreation Department.

Other flag retirement locations in the area include American Legion Post 298 and Post 257. However, this new site offers added security and convenience due to its downtown location within a city facility. The police department was chosen as a fitting home for the box because it employs many veterans who commended Josie’s work.

Josie drew inspiration for her project from her participation in flag duties on Mackinac Island through the Mackinac Island Scout Service Program and from her brother’s service at the U.S. Naval Academy. She identified a need for a respectful location where residents could dispose of worn flags.

“My goal was to have the box ready before Veterans Day, and I’m so happy and relieved we were able to make that happen,” said Josie Pawlowicz.

She partnered with Cereal City Sunrise Rotary to raise funds and collaborated with Michael Waidelich of Black Wolf Flag Co., who designed and built the collection box. Waidelich is also affiliated with American Legion Post 298 and will oversee proper retirement of collected flags through that organization.

Waidelich noted that while folding is not required before placing a flag in the box, residents can ask Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts for help if needed since they are trained in flag etiquette.

Mayor Mark Behnke commented during the ceremony: “We are privileged to be the recipient of this important collection box and take great pride in showcasing Josie’s work in honor of our great country. The City of Battle Creek is pleased to recognize young people such as Josie, knowing that today’s youth will be tomorrow leaders.”

Josie has completed over 80 hours of community service on this initiative and plans to create another collection box soon. Her aim is to preserve respect for national symbols while educating others about proper flag handling.

Flag disposal boxes are now available at:
– American Legion Post 298 – 228 N. 20th St., Springfield
– American Legion Post 257 – 7475 B Drive N., Battle Creek
– Battle Creek Police Department lobby – 34 N. Division St., Battle Creek

Josie Pawlowicz has been active in community service for several years through Girl Scouts and hopes her efforts inspire others to honor national symbols.
