The City of Battle Creek announced on Apr. 23 that a fire on Grenville Street resulted in one fatality late Wednesday night.

According to the city, the Battle Creek Fire Department responded at approximately 10:30 p.m. after a neighbor reported the blaze at a two-story home. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames coming from a first-floor window and began efforts to extinguish the fire and search for residents inside.

Neighbors informed crews that two people might have been inside the building. During operations, one resident exited an upstairs apartment and told firefighters that someone could still be in the first-floor unit. A search was conducted by Truck 1 while Car 3 established command at the scene.

Firefighters located a victim on the first floor who had died during suppression efforts. The fire was quickly contained with major damage limited to one area of the structure. Rescue 2 searched the second floor thoroughly, while additional units provided support functions.

The Battle Creek Police Department managed scene control and LifeCare Ambulance offered support services during the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no further information has been released at this time.

“The City of Battle Creek extends its sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.”
