The City of Battle Creek announced on Apr. 23 that a fire on Grenville Street the previous night resulted in one fatality. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. when the Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a report from a neighbor about a structure fire.

This event highlights ongoing concerns regarding residential fire safety and emergency response efforts in the community.

According to officials, Engine 3 arrived at the scene to find flames coming from a first-floor window of a two-story home. Firefighters were informed by neighbors that two people might have been inside. During operations, one resident exited an upstairs apartment and told crews that another person could still be inside the first-floor apartment.

Truck 1 conducted a search of the main floor while Car 3 established command at the scene. Firefighters located a victim on the first floor who had died during their suppression efforts. The fire was quickly extinguished, with major damage limited to one area of the building. Rescue 2 searched the second floor thoroughly, and additional units provided support functions throughout the response.

The Battle Creek Police Department assisted with scene control, and LifeCare Ambulance was present for support services during and after firefighting operations.

Authorities say that an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time. “The City of Battle Creek extends its sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” officials said.
