The City of Battle Creek announced on Apr. 27 that it is reminding residents and visitors that reckless driving, street racing, and exhibition riding are not allowed on public roads as warmer weather brings more motorcycles and group activities to local streets.
Concerns from the community about safety, noise, and property impacts have influenced the city’s approach to managing reckless and exhibition driving. Officials say these behaviors can endanger public safety, damage infrastructure, interfere with traffic flow, and disrupt neighborhood peace.
To address these issues, the city enforces Ordinance 652.04. This ordinance allows for enforcement actions such as impoundment or permanent forfeiture of vehicles—including motorcycles—found engaging in reckless or exhibition driving. The City Attorney’s Office has indicated its readiness to work with the Battle Creek Police Department to begin forfeiture proceedings against vehicles that threaten public safety.
The city encourages motorcycle riders who operate safely and respectfully but stresses that stunt riding, drag racing, burnouts, tricks, or other forms of exhibition driving are not permitted under any circumstances on city streets. Those planning group rides or gatherings are reminded to do so legally: events on private property require owner permission; gatherings at parks may need a special permit depending on size; small informal groups can meet without a permit if they do not block access or create unsafe conditions.
“Public streets are shared spaces,” said Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley. “Responsible riders understand that their actions affect everyone using the roadway. When riders look out for one another and respect their neighbors, it helps keep our community safe and welcoming for all.”
The city says its goal is to promote safe activities while preventing behavior that puts anyone at risk. Residents with questions about permits or regulations can contact the City of Battle Creek Information Center.
