The City of Battle Creek is asking residents who receive city water service to identify the material of the pipe that brings water into their homes. This effort is part of a long-term plan to replace lead pipes throughout the city and to comply with state and federal rules that require an inventory of water service lines.
Residents are encouraged to learn how to check their own pipe material and report this information through a brief survey provided by the city. The goal is to help Water Division staff prioritize which pipes need replacement first.
Lead in service lines can raise the risk of exposure, but city officials say they test drinking water daily and use an anti-corrosion product called ortho-phosphate. This treatment helps prevent lead from entering the water supply through pipes. Additionally, the Water Division collects 30 samples each year from homes across Battle Creek to ensure these safety measures are effective.
The city thanks residents for their cooperation in this process.
