The City of Battle Creek announced on March 13 that the start of water main and lead service line replacement work in the Post-Franklin neighborhood has been postponed by one week. The project, originally set to begin on March 16, will now commence on March 23 due to the contractor, Hoffman Bros., assisting with tornado cleanup efforts in Union City following a recent deadly storm.

City officials said they appreciate residents’ patience during this delay. “The city knows our community would want to support Union City at this moment and appreciates residents’ patience while the contractor assists with recovery work,” the statement read.

The upcoming project aims to replace aging water mains, remove lead and galvanized service lines, and rebuild streets and sidewalks in several areas of the Post Addition neighborhood. Initial work will focus on Lathrop Avenue from Main Street to Academy Street, Post Avenue from Main Street to Caine Street, and Douglas Street from Cliff Street to Post Avenue.

According to city information, construction is planned over two seasons. Approximately 75 percent of the work is expected to be completed by October 31, 2026, with remaining tasks scheduled for spring and summer of 2027. Construction hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with occasional Saturday work possible.

Residents who have not yet returned their Lead Service Consent Form are encouraged to do so promptly. The city noted that crews cannot reconnect lead or galvanized service lines without a completed form, which may result in interrupted water service for affected properties once work reaches each block.

For additional questions or requests for new consent forms, residents can contact the City of Battle Creek at 269.966.3311.
