Battle Creek Chamber issued the following announcement on June 5.

The Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce announced it is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on a national initiative to address inequality of opportunity.

The Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce will join the U.S. Chamber’s national town hall event on June 25 where business and community leaders will discuss concrete actions that can be taken by government and the private sector to address inequality through education, employment, entrepreneurship, and criminal justice reform. As a partner on this important initiative, the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce will host local and industry dialogues to further the discussion.

“As a business advocacy organization, representing approximately 600 members and over 30,000 employees across Calhoun County, we too stand in solidarity against racism and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society and economy,” said Kara Beer, President, Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce “words and statements are important but also we strongly believe it is imperative for our community success we must move to collaborative action as we address the issue with a robust plan of action. Nothing is more powerful for business and our community than people—the perspectives they share, the conversations they spark, and the action they take. Encouraging the diversity of our people is the key to creating a community where everyone is welcome and where businesses thrive through new ideas. The Chamber is your ally and change agent on the road to creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce. We work alongside businesses as they welcome, connect, and engage the talent they need.”

“The moral case for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace is indisputable, and there’s overwhelming evidence that greater diversity benefits the American economy, businesses, communities and employees,” said U.S. Chamber President Suzanne Clark. “We are proud to partner with Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce on this initiative and help develop a robust plan of action.”

The work of this national initiative will build on the work already undertaken by the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce to work with member businesses seeking to further their collective interests, while advancing our community, region, state and nation. Individuals and business owners in our community join our chamber for our networks, influence, and look to us to advocate on behalf of the community at large, economic prosperity and business interests. Our chamber exist and focuses to some degree on the following five principals: Building communities to which residents, visitors and investors are attracted; Promoting our communities; Striving to ensure future prosperity via a pro-business climate; Representing the unified voice of the employer community; and Reducing transactional friction through well-functioning networks.
